3 Must-Visit Summer Destinations in the Southeast

Of course the Southeast is known for its iconic destinations like Charleston and Savannah. I have a continued love affair with both of those cities. BUT - what about the hidden gems in the southeast? What are the lesser-known but must-visit summer destinations in the southeast? The Southeast has shocked me again and again with its diverse expanse of geography and stunning destinations (you can drive from the Florida coast to the Blue Ridge mountains in 5ish hours). Filled with natural beauty, charming towns, and stunning coastlines, this region offers a plethora of destinations to explore.

3 Must-Visit Summer Destinations in the Southeast

  1. Highlands, North Carolina: Where Nature Meets Luxury. Nestled in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Highlands, NC, is a picturesque town that offers a harmonious blend of natural wonders and refined elegance. Here, you can embark on outdoor adventures amidst lush forests, cascading waterfalls, and scenic hiking trails. Explore the iconic Whiteside Mountain, enjoy a local brew, or simply revel in the serenity of the Highlands Botanical Garden. After a day of exploration, unwind in charming downtown Highlands, filled with boutique shops, art galleries, and award-winning restaurants. George and I played a round of golf at The Old Edwards Club and it will forever be in our top rounds of all time.

  2. Fairhope, Alabama: A Quaint Coastal Haven. Prepare to fall in love with the idyllic coastal town of Fairhope, AL. When George and I first visited, we pondered the likelihood of New Orleans and Savannah having a love child. And their love child would be Fairhope. With its vibrant arts scene, picturesque streets (wait, are we in EUROPE?), and panoramic views of Mobile Bay, Fairhope exudes southern charm and tranquility. Stroll along the Fairhope Pier, browse through local art galleries, and indulge in fresh seafood at the town's renowned restaurants. Don't miss a visit to The Grand Hotel, a resort located on Point Clear with sprawling and shaded grounds. This resort has been in business for over 150 years and has a certain air of southern elegance about it. If you’re a golfer, you’ll love the Fairhope courses.

  3. Rosemary Beach, Florida: Coastal Paradise. For those seeking a beach getaway, Rosemary Beach, FL, is a coastal paradise that will leave you spellbound. Is this the cutest town in America? I’d vote yes. This charming and meticulously planned town showcases breathtaking architecture (again … are we in EUROPE?!), cobblestone streets, and pristine white sand beaches. They don’t call it the Emerald Coast for nothing. Spend your days lounging by the turquoise waters, exploring the winding bike paths, or indulging in retail therapy at the town's boutique shops.

The Southeast region of the United States boasts a collection of incredible summer destinations, each offering a unique blend of natural beauty, rich history, and warm hospitality. Whether you choose to embark on outdoor adventures in Highlands, immerse yourself in the coastal charm of Fairhope, or bask in the sun-drenched beaches of Rosemary Beach, you're guaranteed a memorable summer getaway. So pack your bags, hit the road, and explore these hidden gems of the Southeast. Happy travels!
